Preventive Care is the Future

People who know me understand why I am a huge fan of advocacy on all levels specifically in the healthcare movement. Most Americans are not aware of the inner workings of their insurance coverage and how they can maximize and utilize their coverage. Myth number one is “I have health insurance to use when I get sick.” No, not true as a matter of fact most health plans must cover a set of preventive services — like shots and screening tests — at no cost to you. In most cases it includes plans available with Medicaid, Medicare all the way through to the Health Insurance Marketplace. These services are free only when delivered by a doctor or other provider in your plan’s network.

My staff and I realize we must play a bigger part in re-educating and de-programming our patients. Patients come to CareSTL Health when they are experiencing a medical problem or crises. What we want to emphasize to the community is to push the reset button NOW and ask yourselves five questions when you are getting the kids ready to head back to school. Make this a time for you to reset too!

  1. Do you have a primary provider?
  2. Women: Have you had your annual pap exam?
  3. For the kids: Are the kids up-to-date on their physicals and immunizations?
  4. Has the entire family had their annual dental exam?

Moms and Dads should put these five questions on their “To Do List” for the family. The kids start school in August and/or September which is a good time to make sure the entire family visits the doctor. We must be advocates for our own personal health and the health of our families. Healthcare is not a privilege it’s a right and our advocacy must be reflective of this.

There are agencies all over St. Louis that can help families and individuals who need to enroll in Medicaid, Medicare and Marketplace including our enrollment department. Ask questions! You should know what coverage you have and your family. We are always open to accommodating families and answering any questions parents may have. This is one of the reasons for school based clinics in Jennings, Hazelwood and Riverview Gardens. When the kids see us on site we can educate them about the importance of taking care of themselves and their families.

Insurance companies today focus on quality measures and healthy outcomes. Gone are the days of reactive care. It’s all about prevention and advocacy!!! We care!
